Experience the healing power of massage.
Odonata Therapeutic Massage is a female veteran-owned business offering licensed professional massage focused on therapeutic healing for stubborn and chronic physical ailments.
Our clients receive customized treatments to experience relief and improve overall well-being.
Please allow me to introduce myself. I am Amber Jones, a US Navy veteran. After leaving the military, I returned to university to pursue a career in nursing. During my studies, an injury from my time in service caused me to become completely non-ambulatory. I woke up one morning and could no longer bear any weight through my right foot.
After medical intervention and surgery, I was able to walk again but with the understanding that my original injury had gone untreated for so long, the ministrations weren’t permanent and I could expect to re-experience mobility impairments and would require future corrective surgeries. The physical stamina of a profession like nursing meant it was not a practical, long-term career option.
As I pondered possibilities that fulfilled my desire to operate in a healing, health-oriented field with the realistic limitations of my physical condition, I repeatedly returned to the idea of massage. Over the 20 years since I was first injured, I had frequently been referred for massage therapy- from which I had experienced significant benefits. Through my research, I learned that I could adapt the way I applied massage in order to accommodate my physical disabilities.
Five years ago I attended the Aveda Institute of Beauty and Wellness and became licensed in the state of Wisconsin as a massage therapist. I learned from the beginning to perform the majority of my massage from a seated position and my liability has become one of greatest strengths.
Since I do not approach the body from the same angle and perspective as most other therapists, I have developed a unique method for assessing and treating muscular tension and chronic conditions.
While relaxation massage has many wonderful benefits, and its true that all massage has a necessary relaxation component, I decided to focus my practice on therapeutic technique. I enjoy the detective work of determining how and why my client is experiencing certain muscular weaknesses or difficulties and apply specific anatomical knowledge to resolving those complications, at their cause, rather than only offering immediate (but often temporary) relief.
I employ post secondary training in precision neuromuscular therapy (PNMT) and kinesiology towards my evaluation and treatment processes and seek to educate my clients on how their movements contribute to their muscular and postural conditions. I am constantly adding to my education foundation with a focus on medical modalities.
My approach is intuitive - I see the muscular condition through touch- and adjust my pressure levels and techniques according to the needs of the situation. This may involve employing stretching, heat therapies (including hot stones), static or dynamic cups, fascial scrapers and pressure point tools. While I am able to apply very firm pressure - I have been told my fingers are made of steel- I understand that firm pressure is not appropriate at all times, in all situations, or for all clients. While it may feel “painfully good”, very firm pressure often produces the exact opposite of the sought-for result, causing the muscles to tense and protect the injured area, resisting relief rather than loosening to allow for release and clearance.
I understand how parts of the body have a cataclysmic domino-like affect on other parts and that the area of complaint may not be the actual area of impact. Some presented conditions can be corrected- others can only be managed. And often, once a superficial layer of the onion is peeled away - so to speak - deeper concerns are revealed. When a client is experiencing chronic, mobility-impairing conditions, a once or twice a year relaxation massage is unlikely to do much other than feel good in the moment. I remind clients that the situation (for which they’re seeking relief) didn’t happen overnight, so its unlikely to be alleviated overnight. Physical heeling is a process and we can create a treatment plan!
I have found that my personal experiences with long-term injury, chronic pain, and cataclysmic complications to other areas of my body that resulted from my original injury, allow me to understand and relate to my clients with a deeper level of understanding and compassion than they receive from many other healthcare professionals. I relate, extensively, to the concerns and frustrations my clients express regarding their mobility limitations.
I perform my massage with meaningful intention directed at pain relief, improved range-of-motion, increased flexibility, and overall decompression. My work will be applied with skilled focus on your body and concerns and aims to providing relief, to the best of my ability and within the scope of my practice. I will also be the first to tell you if I think you would be better served by a different therapist or that you would benefit from a specialization I do not possess. My goal is that my client receives the best care possible and I know that in certain situations, that care may be with someone better matched to the client's unique needs. Massage is such an interesting field in that ten different therapists can all be preforming the “same” work, each from their singular perspective, and the result is ten wildly different yet specialized treatments. If I’m not the best therapist for you, I will try to match you with someone who is.
Please reach us at mke.odonata.massage@outlook.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
First, you should know that Licensed Massage Therapists (LMTs) are certified health care practitioners, governed by the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services. Your massage will be conducted according to state and national regulations.
Your massage appointment will begin with an initial consultation, where you will need to fill out some brief paperwork regarding your concerns and health history.
Then the LMT will show you an area where you can undress - always to your comfort level- and will step out of the room while you change and get onto the table. For most people, this means removing all or most of their clothing, sometimes with the exception of underwear. It is also recommended that you remove all jewelry and other items that could interfere with the massage or become damaged by the massage oils and lotions that will be used.
In accordance with Wisconsin law, you will remain covered at all times with at least a full sheet. Your LMT will only uncover the part of the body that is being worked on, during the time that it is being worked on. This is called "draping". So, your back will be "undraped" while the therapist is working on your back, but will be re-covered when the therapist moves on to your leg. That leg will be re-covered when the therapist moves to the other leg and so on.
At all times, your comfort is paramount. If you are chilly, blankets will be added or the heated mattress pad turned up. If you are warm, AC and fans can be adjusted.
You will likely begin lying facedown on the massage table, with your face positioned into a comfortable face cradle. About halfway through the session, (according to your needs), the LMT will assist you to roll over whilst under the covers, and get repositioned on your back. At all times, cushions and bolsters are available to ensure your positioning is most comfortable.
In order to help you relax into your massage session, the lighting is kept low and spa music is played softly. However, know that all elements exist for your comfort and can be adjusted to suit your preferences. Lights can be turned bright, music can be turned off, etc.
After your session, the LMT will again step out of the room, while you get up from the massage table and redress. After your session, there will be some time for your therapist to discuss their findings and for you to ask questions.
Massage can be effectively administered with or without clothing. However, your level of undress will determine the type of massage that can be performed. Many massage techniques require the use of an oil or lotion to facilitate a glide of the massage therapists hands across the muscle tissues. Restrictive clothing can prevent the use of these items. In such cases, the therapist will have to perform the massage primarily through compression techniques.
If you want to remain clothed, it is recommended that you at least wear loose clothing such a tank top and yoga pants or loose shorts. Back, neck and shoulder work is best performed without a bra, but if one must be worn, a minimal athletic bra or bralette is best.
Try to avoid restrictive clothing such as high, stiff collars, skintight items, or denim. Belts should be removed.
No. Unfortunately according to Wisconsin law, a towel does not provide the necessary level of coverage to maintain client modestly and ensure a comfortable and safe environment for both client and therapist.
Wisconsin draping standards are used throughout the massage session. This includes full hip and breast coverage at all times, regardless of gender.
Optimally, we’d all be freshly showered before receiving a massage. However, sometimes we’re coming straight from work or other activities. In these cases, I’d recommend having showered that same day and freshening up prior to your appointment. Wet wipes and deodorant reapplication can do wonders and is better than excessive cologne or perfume application.
For your convenience, both wipes and spray deodorant are provided for use before or after your session.
Unfortunately, if you arrive carrying extreme odors, especially from any type of drug abuse, you will not be able to be seen. Please do not come into the studio carrying strong tobacco, alcohol, or cannabis odors.
Prenatal massage is generally safe and can relieve common pregnancy discomforts like backaches, hip pain, swelling, and difficulty sleeping. The relaxed state during a massage can lower anxiety levels and massage can enhance blood flow, which is beneficial during pregnancy.
Always get approval from your healthcare provider before getting a prenatal massage, especially if you have a high-risk pregnancy or conditions like preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, or a history of miscarriage.
At Odonata, we employ side-lying positions and special cushions, avoiding deep pressure on the abdomen and specific acupressure points, to ensure comfort and safety.
The following essential oils are NOT recommended during pregnancy and will not be offered for pregnant clients: Aniseed, Anise, Arnica, Basil, Birch, Boldo, Camphor, Cedarwood, Clary sage, Cinnamon, Clove, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Fennel, Geranium, Hyssop, Jasmine, Juniper berry, Mugwort, Lavender, Lemon, Lemon Balm, Neroli, Nutmeg, Orange, Oregano, Patchouli, Parsley Seed, Pennyroyal, Black Pepper, Peppermint, Rose, Rosemary, Rue, Sage, Sandalwood, Tansy, Tarragon, Thuja, and Wintergreen.
It's important to note that even essential oils that are considered safe during pregnancy can cause adverse reactions in some individuals. Always consult with a healthcare professional before using any essential oils during pregnancy.
